BOTOX® is a commonly used neuromuscular inhibitor. Dr. Reddy is certified in Botox use, and at her Dallas office she uses Botox for TMJ pain.
What can BOTOX Treat?
Besides being used to eliminate facial wrinkles, Botox has been approved as an alternative treatment for temporo-mandibular joint (TMJ) disorders, jaw pain, and tension. For patients with teeth grinding, headaches, jaw stress, or limitation of jaw opening, it has been shown to minimize symptoms. While Botox is still an experimental treatment, studies have shown it to be effective in treating dental needs. For more information on TMJ, visit our Dallas TMJ page.
What Can I Expect During and After Treatment?
Since Botox is a non-invasive, non-surgical procedure, it can be done at a certified dentist’s office. While Botox is made from Botulinum Toxin, it will not spread from the injection site. Dr. Reddy will determine how many injections you will need and how long treatment will take. Once you’re seated in the chair, the entire Botox appointment should only take 10 to 30 minutes.
The injections themselves feel like tiny pin pricks. Side effects include pain at the injection site, but this is usually mild and will dissipate over time. Using ice packs or anesthetic creams prior to treatment can prevent this pain. If you are afraid of needles, Dr. Reddy can provide nitrous oxide (laughing gas).
