After three visits to an allergist, my test results are positive for many medicals and chemicals. My allergist diagnosed me with toxicant-induced loss of tolerance (TILT) or multiple chemical sensitivity. I’m concerned about my unhealthy teeth and my sensitivity to dental cement, titanium, chromium, and other dental materials. I have a tooth that had a failed root canal and an apicoectomy. The tooth hurts and needs attention. I think that a dentist will probably need to extract it. The other issue is that my bite is causing a lot of jaw pain and headaches. I need orthodontic care, but metal braces are not an option. I’m willing to travel for a dentist who works with patients who have type IV metal allergies. I’ve been looking online for one, but I don’t see my allergy type mentioned on any dentist’s websites. Where do I start? Thank you. Arianna from Kansas
Arianna,
Thanks for your injury. Your situation is challenging, but try not to let it overwhelm you. Although you might not find a dentist with training in your specific allergies, you can find a dentist who is willing to provide treatment options that avoid or limit your sensitivities. You can start by calling dental offices and asking if the dentist works with patients with allergies or sensitives. You might even ask if they have existing patients with sensitivities to discern if the dentist has experience in this area.
Invisalign offers metal-free orthodontic treatment
Your new dentist can coordinate your care with an endodontist, or root canal specialist, who is also willing to find materials that won’t provoke a reaction during your treatment. If it’s possible to preserve your tooth, an endodontist has the training, skills, and tools to do it.
Regarding orthodontic treatment, there are clear metal-free alternatives, including Invisalign. Invisalign is made of BPA-free medical-grade thermoplastic that does not contain BPS, latex, or gluten. In advance of an Invisalign consultation, you can ask your allergist about your potential sensitivity to Invisalign aligners.
We hope that it won’t take long to find a dentist who is willing to treat you and help restore your oral health.
